Background for journalists and editors writing about Outnumbered.

About Outnumbered

Outnumbered Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit helping children stand up to and cope with bullying. We bring conversations about kindness into schools and communities through book readings, and share articles for parents and educators.

Our mission is to help children recognize bullying, ask a trusted adult for help, and include classmates who feel left out.

Outnumbered was founded in 2024 by Zachary Penan, a high school student who wrote the children's book Outnumbered.

The Book

Written by Zachary Penan, Outnumbered follows eight-year-old Jack, a fictional child starting at a new school in Stamford, Connecticut. When Jack experiences bullying, he struggles to tell the adults around him. His mother, teacher, and classmates become part of his support system.

The story is a starting point for conversations about courage, friendship, and asking for help. It is written for children ages 4–8, Pre-K through 2nd grade.

Outnumbered is sold on Amazon. All revenue from purchases of Outnumbered goes to Outnumbered Inc. to support its anti-bullying activities. Read more about the book.

What We Do

Outnumbered offers educational resources and readings, not counseling or incident handling.

The Organization

Zach's sister, Julia Penan, founded Pink Warriors, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports children when a parent battles breast cancer.
